Beyond the Ballot: Experiences working at the GSO.

GSO Officers will have an opportunity to set GSO policy and create initiatives to benefit the graduate student body as a whole. We have three elected positions: the President, Vice President (VP) and Graduate Vice President for Multicultural Affairs (GVPMA). Together with the Treasurer & Assistant to the President, they make up the GSO Executive Board (E-Board).

If you are interested in running for an elected position, please read carefully through the job descriptions:

Eligibility:

  • For GSO all E-Board positions:
    • Matriculated graduate student in good standing at Binghamton University.
    • At least two semesters remaining at Binghamton University & able to complete full term of office.
  • New this year – Additional requirements for the President and Vice President:
    The President and Vice President shall run on a single ticket with a running mate from a different school within Binghamton University.
    The six schools are:
    • Harpur College of Arts and Sciences
    • Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science
    • School of Management
    • Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences
    • College of Community and Public Affairs
    • School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

  • For the BU Council position, anyone who is eligible to vote in either the SA or GSO elections may run. (Please see SA bylaws for possible additional requirements).

Requirements:

  • Candidates must submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) to the Elections Committee by Wednesday, February 25. The LOI must include:
    • Candidate’s full name
    • Candidate’s photo
    • Candidate’s B-mail username
    • Position candidate is seeking
    • Election cycle candidate is running in
    • GSO E-Board Nomination Petition, with 25 signatures of graduate students. (Students must not have signed for another candidate in the same race.)
    • A completed Affiliation Disclosure Form.
  • Candidates are required to attend the Candidates Meeting organized by the Elections Committee.
  • Candidates are required to participate in the pre-election debate at the Candidates Forum. For GSO positions, thirty percent (30%) of the total vote allocation shall be dedicated to the debate, while the remaining seventy percent (70%) shall be attributed to actual ballot.

Candidates must adhere to all campaign guidelines. Details of the guidelines will be reviewed at the Candidates Meeting. Failure to adhere to the campaign guidelines will result in penalties, to be determined by the Elections Committee.
