The GSO proudly provides funding for many member organizations, all made possible by the graduate student activity fee. Here is our current list of orgs. There are three categories of GSO member orgs: departmental orgs, Socio-Cultural Multicultural Assembly (SCMA) orgs, and interest groups. Dept orgs receive a budget based on the number of graduate students enrolled in their program. SCMA orgs and interest groups each receive a joint budget that is then split between their member orgs. Please see the GSO Budget for more details.
In order to access their budgets, all sub-orgs must complete the chartering & recognition process each year!
Please note: All orgs must send out a Call for Candidates announcement, and wait at least ONE WEEK before sending out a General Election announcement. Both announcements must be distributed through B-Engaged, org listservs, social media, or other means with a documented large audience.
All orgs should review the Chartering & Recognition Dos & Don’ts before they begin the election process.
All orgs must submit:
- Org charter (For a copy of your previous charter, contact vp@gsobinghamton.org)
- Proof of proper elections (see Dos & Don’ts above), including:
- Copy of Call for Candidates announcement
- Copy of General Election announcement
- Copy of election results
- Org details, including:
- Official org name
- Org acronym/ abbreviation
- Confirm org email
- Any socials for the website
- Names & emails of officers (All orgs must have at least a President, Treasurer & Senator)
Additionally, new non-departmental orgs must also submit a Chartering Request Form with 25 signatures.

Starting a New Org
Finding Other Interested Students
We are always looking for new orgs to enhance the GSO! If you would like to start a departmental org, you just need a president, treasurer, & senator, and the documentation listed above. If you are looking to start an SCMA org, you will also need the signatures of 25 interested students. Please contact our GVPMA at gvpma@gsobinghamton.org if you would like assistance in starting a SCMA org or interest group.
Creating a Charter
The Dept Charter Template and SCMA Charter Template can be used to create your organization’s charter. Additionally, please review this Sample Dept Charter and Sample SCMA Charter to help you get an idea of what a completed charter should look like. See Chartering & Recognition Dos & Don’ts for more details.
